Passing of Pete Rayner

It is with great sadness that we learnt last week of the passing of a good friend of the rugby club, Pete Rayner.

It is with great sadness that we learnt last week of the passing of a good friend of the rugby club, Pete Rayner.

Pete came to the rugby club with his young sons, Aron and Scott, when Scott joined Brian Isted’s age group at Under 7s.  Aron later joined Dave Nightingales’ age group for a while, before leaving to concentrate on golf.

Pete, along with his wife Sherren, quickly entered into the spirit of the club, attending social functions, senior matches and pre-match lunches, and made lifelong friendships with other members such as Chris Dare, Keith Breen, Mick Hine, and the late Simon Fookes.  Pete also sponsored the club over the years, which was really appreciated, especially while the Junior section was being built up. Pete’s passion was rallying, a passion shared by all his family, and once the boys stopped playing rugby this was what he concentrated on, making friends all over the globe.

Pete last spent time with us at the Diamond Anniversary Ball, where most of his time was spent reminiscing with all his friends.  Pete was a giant of a man, in size and character, and always lit up a room.  He was rarely seen without a smile, and I believe this continued to the end.  He will be missed by so many, but he will be the topic of conversations and memories for a very long time to come.  Rest in peace Pete.

Pete’s funeral will take place on Friday 30th at 2.30pm at Three Counties Crematorium, Halstead Road, High Garrett, Braintree CM7 5PB.

Family flowers only please, but donations to Farleigh Hospiceare welcome on the day.

Please note the dress code for the service will be traditional black.  Guests are welcome to change into ‘something more comfortable’ that reminds you of Pete, or something you would wear when seeing him, for the ‘Celebration of Life’ which will take place at The Essex Golf and Country Club, Earls Colne, Colchester, CO6 2NS from 4pm until late.
