BRAINTREE went to the top of the Canterbury Jack Essex 1 Promotion League by default on Saturday after being awarded an away walkover.
Tree were geared up for a big promotion push after winning Essex 1B at a canter, qualifying for the promotion play-off league with three other sides from their league and the top four from Essex1A.
But Saturday’s scheduled opponents Billericay contacted the black and ambers on Thursday last week and forfeited the game, saying they were unable to field a side.
As a result Tree were granted a walkover and credited with the statutory 5 point league victory which gave them poll position in the fledgling league without having to make a tackle in anger.
Fellow Essex1B graduates Maldon, Canvey Island and Clacton all won their games with victories over Millwall, Old Brentwoods and Stanford-le-Hope.
Each of the sides in the promotion league take their points from 1A and 1B into the new competition with them, with Tree sitting top with a two-point lead over second placed Millwall.
The two sides will face each other at Robbs Wood in the black and ambers next scheduled fixture on Saturday 11th February.
A number of first teamers spurned the chance of a weekend off and volunteered to bolster the 2nd XV ranks and helped them earn a hard fought 20-19 victory away to Woodford IIs on Saturday.
The victory was secured with tries from James Moore (2) and Paul Evans in addition to a penalty and a conversion from senior fly-half Craig Willis.
Tree’s second string are at home to Maldon IIs in the semi-finals of the Second Team County Cup this Saturday.
