BURNHAM-ON-CROUCH...5 BRAINTREE...79 (Canterbury Jack League Essex 1B)
Report created by D Gilder and J Troup
BRAINTREE blasted their way to second place in Essex 1B with a devastating 13-try blitz which left their opponents utterly shell-shocked.
No fewer than 11 different players crossed the line for Tree, who made short work of their hosts in a thoroughly one-sided game.
The only downside for the black and ambers was a serious injury to scrum-half Joss Adams, who was instrumental in his side’s dominance before being forced from the pitch.
First half tries from Dan Johnston, Daryl Coote, Lee Turner and Adams put the visitors in a commanding position, with two Craig Willis conversions giving them a 24-0 interval lead.
But after the break Tree really cut loose, running Burnham ragged as they pulled them all over the field at will and ruthlessly exploited the holes in their beleaguered defence.
The home side were helpless as the visitors ran in nine further tries courtesy of Dominic Dann (2), Willis, Fergus Rollit-Mason, Tom Carslake, the returning Jamie Prince, James Abbott and replacement John Smillie (2).
Three more Willis conversions plus successful kicks from Abbott and replacement Darren Page put Tree out of sight, although Burnham did notch the last try of the game with what proved to be a meagre consolation.
After the game BRUFC Joint Coach Brian Joslin said: “It looks on the face of it a bit of a mismatch but we can only play what is put in front of us.
“Everything we tried came off and we just blew Burnham away. The only down side was the injury to Joss but we hope he makes a speedy recovery.
“Jamie Prince made a huge impact when he came on and he’s a great asset to us after returning to the club following a spell at Hertford, and John Smillie was equally effective off the bench.
“We’re starting to get real strength in depth and the competition for places is only going to benefit the whole club.”
In a great weekend for the Robbs Wood club Braintree’s second string continued their impressive start to the season with a shock 31-22 win away to Upminster IIs, academy graduates Will Turner and Dylan Moss playing pivotal roles.
And the black and ambers’ academy side made it a hat-trick of wins with a 34-7 victory over Sudbury Colts.
Tree’s first team are back in Essex 1B action on Saturday when they entertain Canvey Island at Beckers Green Road.
The black and ambers are level on points with leaders Maldon but their rivals have a slightly better points differential.
Added Joslin: “Canvey are a good side and our games against them are always competitive, although we usually get the better of them at our place.
“We’ll be taking nothing for granted though and it’d be great to see a big crowd at Robbs Wood cheering the boys on.”
