BRAINTREE moved up to second place in London 3 Essex with a fine 24-13 victory away to Basildon on Saturday.
A brace of tries from Joe Young plus further scores from Tyler Worster and Josh Levy plus two conversions from Elliot Swallow wrapped up the points for the black and ambers.
Basildon looked strong in the forwards throughout but Tree defended superbly to prevent their hosts from turning possession into points and always looked the more dangerous side once they could unleash their speedy back line.
In a highly competitive match it was Braintree who took the lead after eight minutes when Elliott Swallow made a break on the outside passing to Joe Young who went over in the corner. 5-0.
Basildon responded straight away with a penalty after Tree were penalised from the restart (5-3) and the next 20 minutes saw the visitors having to show their defensive strengths as Basildon camped in their half. During this period the home side had been strong in the scrummage but on 35 minutes one of their props was yellow carded.
Tree took full advantage, spreading the ball wide for Tyler Worster to score a try to extend their lead for a 10-3 half-time advantage.
After the break it was Basildon who made the next score on 49 minutes from a driving maul from the line out, diving over from another ruck to reduce the gap to just two points (10-8).
On 55 minutes the black and ambers were penalised for using the outside arm at the line out allowing Basildon to kick to the corner, where a driving maul from the lineout led to a second home try to give the hosts the lead for the first time in the match (10-13).
Tree were getting starved of the ball as they sought to regain the lead but on 69 minutes they turned over a Basildon scrum and Young took full advantage to get his second try of the game, with Elliott Swallow kicking the conversion (17-13).
The black and ambers needed to see the game out but every time they got out of their half they would be penalised and sent back to defend in their 22.
Finally though they fought through to the Basildon 22 and forced a knock-on.
The hosts won the resultant scrum but knocked on again, enabling Tree's Josh Levy to take full advantage and go over in the 79th minute, securing a four-try bonus point win as Swallow did the honours with his boot (24-13).
Delighted BRUFC Head Coach Jamie Clarke said: "It was a tight game where we had to defend really well at times.
"In possession we always looked dangerous and a threat to Basildon, and I'm delighted with our start to the season.
"Three wins from four games is a testament to the hard work the players are putting in."
Tree are without a game this weekend but return to London 3 Essex on Saturday 19th October when they host Mavericks at Robbs Wood.
