CAMPION...81 BRAINTREE...0 (London North East Two)
NINE straight defeats from nine games – that’s the depressing statistic that shell-shocked Braintree’s management team had to contemplate after Saturday’s comprehensive hammering at the hands of a rampant Campion side.
After a promising performance the previous week against Norwich the black and ambers were hoping they might have turned a corner in what has been a dismal season to date.
But five of the side that started that game were forced to pull out of the Campion fixture due to work commitments, leaving Tree with just 17 players fit to travel, and no backs replacement.
They faced an uphill struggle before the referee even blew his whistle to start the game, and came up against a Campion outfit that put them to the sword with a ruthless display.
The Brentwood side scored the first of their seven first-half tries after just five minutes, converting four of them for an unassailable 43-0 interval lead.
Playing with the slope after the break they scored again with just a minute on the clock, adding a ninth try on 48 minutes, and although Tree managed to shut them out for a 20-minute period thereafter, it proved only temporary respite.
The visitors had several chances to reduce the deficit, but were thwarted time and again by handling errors at the crucial moment, leaving Campion to rub salt in their wounds in inevitable fashion.
Battle weary Tree shipped four more tries in quick succession towards the end of the game, all of which were converted by the home side, who looked like they might be able to progress further through the London & SE Division on this showing.
Joint coach Brian Joslin said: “It was a tough day. Fair play to Campion they totally dominated us from start to finish and were worthy winners.
“We seem to take one step forward and three steps back at the moment. After a promising performance against Norwich the week before we hoped to improve this week. How wrong could we have been!
“Training was poorly attended this week, we had a few players drop and our fly-half Joss Adams picked up a back injury within 10 minutes and had to come off. The reshuffle meant our skipper and number eight Tom Carslake had to play 70 minutes at full back.
“To add to that our centre James Moore pulled his hamstring and had to be replaced at half-time. Our playing resources are really stretched at the moment.
“The players had a huddle after the game and resolved that this is not going to happen again this season. It’s down to them to show the commitment and give the level of performance we know they are capable of.”
Tree are without a game next weekend.
