A cup game against opposition we’ve not played before, proved to be a dominant performance by the Braintree squad. Once the game got under way, in a short space of time, the first real attack of the game resulted in what would prove to be the first of many tries by Braintree, flyhalf Noah Collar touching down, who then converted his own try. Clacton were living off scraps of possession only to lose the ball, or have it stripped from them by the defending B’tree players. Every time B’tree had the ball they looked like scoring. There were some strong purposeful runs from fullback Ethan Scherer, plus others players which resulted in a commanding 1st half. Built on strong play in the forwards, with excellent ball retention in the ruck and a powerful display of pressure in the scrum.
The 2nd half got under way, Clacton still had no answer to the dominance of B’tree’s performance, again making use of the ball when in possession, moving it around freely, often through the hands of center Lewis Morgan until a gap to score was found. Clacton started to look weary, plus injuries appearing in the Clacton team meant the sides ended up playing with reduced numbers and then unopposed scrums. Finally, the referee and coaches made the decision to call time early on the game.
A strong performance by Braintree, who kept the pressure on throughout the game for a convincing win.
