On a sunny morning at home the boys faced an unknown quantity in Colchester U9’s.
Braintree’s defence started well forcing a handling error by Colchester on their 5th attacking phase and with the ball in hand the boys attacked the Colchester line.
Colchester proved to be well organised defensively and held their ground, they were up quickly from the free pass putting pressure on the Braintree attack. The boys quickly realised this and took a step back to give themselves room to take the pass at pace and straighten the runs.
This worked immediately; each attack now breaking the first tackle and making ground. The boys scored the first try with a series of offloads and quick passes and a second from the next attack.
Colchester then shifted up a gear and with quick hands moved the ball through the line and scored just before half-time.
Braintree had the upper-hand for the majority the second-half by moving the ball around, making space and running in two more tries. The defence was superb throughout, holding Colchester each time they attacked. In the dying seconds Colchester finally broke through a tiny gap to score in the corner.
From the start the 2nd game was a Braintree dominated affair - the boys moved the ball around with evasive runs and switch passes – turning Colchester’s defence inside out and a joy to watch. It was clear Braintree wanted it more; every time the ball was loose the boys scooped it up. The boys ran-in 5 scores to Colchester’s 1.
A superb team performance - each phase either attack or defence was supported by every player with 100% commitment.
Well done lads.
