To allow us to kick off the eagerly anticipated 2014/15 campaign it was Chingford who offered us the first taste of under 10's rugby.
A few new rules mixed with a smattering of new players made for a mouthwatering opportunity not to be missed.
The first game saw the squad really take it to Chingford, real energy and enthusiasm put Chingford on the back foot, most notably a barracking run from James Abraham from the kickoff saw him roar straight through the heart of the Chingford defence and notch up the first points of the season.Withtheir tails up what followed was a fantastic squad effort with players really taking on board and putting into play all the training ground hours and drills practiced over the past few weeks.
Braintree ran in a number of unanswered tries before the interval but more impressive was the ferocious tackling from the whole squad, hard hitting and effective rucking followed and dominance was placed firmly on the game.
the bright sunshine and dry conditions saw the ball flying through the hands and the crowd enjoyed some fantastic play from the whole squad.
Chingford put up a spirited defence and made it difficult the whole game long for Braintree to break out of the tight play and full credit goes to them for giving us a tough game and the score did not fully reflect how tough they made it at times.
A six a side fixture against Chingford followed and again it was a great performance from all involved with some really strong tackling and solid rucking over made it a really tight match.
Throughout the match no side backed off and everyone played hard, at the final whistle it was honours even at 2-2.
The final match of the afternoon was against Epping a last minute fixture we took on as they were let down by their opposition, so in the spirit of rugby we took them on as well. Epping had a score to settle having drawn to us in the Essex Cup Final last season and the toss of a coin (which we won) decided who kept the trophy! they were keen to post a win. a combination of strong runners on their part and a few missed tackles on our part meant the score remained tight all match, some crunching tackles from both sides and dogged defence in general made it very difficult for either side to gain a clear advantage. Going into the break braintree were 2-1 down and had it all to play for, a few players were carrying knocks but soldiered on and supported their team mates, ultimately it was a tough game that ended 3-3.
Every single member of the squad gave their all and they can be proud of what they achieved today. Well done to Lily Brand, Jonathan Adams, Will Johnson,Joseph Thorpe , Mac Singleton, Tom Overbury, Joshua Woodcock, Jordan Kelly, Ollie Lennon, Jake Fookes, Daniel Starr, Jacob Kitchen, Freddie Reeve, James Abraham
All in all a great start to the season and it shows a huge amount of promise for the season ahead and it was fantastic to see so much support on the sideline, easy in the sunshine! but parents please start your winter training to get behind the team and be there rain, wind and shine!!
Next stop a mouthwatering smorgasbord that is the Upminster festival, cant wait!
